The Multipath Invariance Approach for Code Multipath Mitigation
نویسندگان
چکیده
The concept of multipath invariance asserts that there exist properties and/or regions of the code correlation function that do not change as a function of the multipath amplitude, delay, phase and phase rate. These Multipath Invariant (MPI) points exist at the plateaus of the correlation function. Previous experiments have demonstrated that despite low correlation power, it is possible to implement the Tracking Error Compensator (TrEC) algorithm, which uses these MPI points to mitigate multipath. In addition, it has been previously asserted that TrEC not adversely affected by finite frontend bandwidth considerations and is potentially very useful for mitigating multipath in extremely narrowband receivers. To evaluate the performance of the MPI approach, the TrEC algorithm was implemented in a narrowband receiver. Using code double-differences over a short baseline between two rooftop antennas, real-time position errors were recorded using live satellites. Three different multipath scenarios were tested. The results were compared with and without multipath compensation and also with and without carrier smoothing applied to the pseudoranges. For the last case—a large multipath scenario—(wideband) narrow correlator receiver performance was compared to (narrowband) TrEC performance. Significant reductions in multipath errors were attained through using this novel approach. Specifically, in all cases TrEC was significantly more effective at reducing the mean bias errors due to multipath than the other techniques.

Software-based Multipath Mitigation: Sampling for Multipath Invariance
Multipath potentially introduces a significant bias error into GPS code phase positioning solutions. That error is dependent on the amplitude, delay, phase, and phase rate of the multipath with respect to the line-of-sight. Many current mitigation techniques attempt to eliminate or reduce the impact of this error source. These techniques vary as widely in hardware and software complexity as the...
متن کاملMultipath Mitigation for Narrowband Receivers
Narrowband receivers are more robust to narrowband interference and to GPS signal faults, but they tend to have relatively poor multipath performance. Few current techniques are capable of mitigating multipath in these receivers. The Tracking Error Compensator (TrEC) however operates independent of the receiver’s precorrelation bandwidth (PCB) using the concept of Multipath Invariance (MPI). Th...
متن کاملGPS Multipath Mitigation: A Nonlinear Regression Approach
Under assumption that the surrounding environment remains unchanged, multipath contamination of GPS measurements can be formulated as a function of the sidereal repeatable geometry of the satellite with respect to the fixed receiver. Hence, multipath error estimation amounts to a regression problem. We present a method for estimating code multipath error of GPS ground fixed stations. By formula...
متن کاملBit Error Performance for Asynchronous Ds Cdma Systems Over Multipath Rayleigh Fading Channels (RESEARCH NOTE)
In recent years, there has been considerable interest in the use of CDMA in mobile communications. Bit error rate is one of the most important parameters in the evaluation of CDMA systems. In this paper, we develop a technique to find an accurate approximation to the probability of bit error for asynchronous direct–sequence code division multiple–access (DS/CDMA) systems by modeling the multipl...
متن کاملNovel Multipath Mitigation Methods using a Dual-polarization Antenna
There are many methods for mitigating GNSS multipath errors. However, none of them completely eliminate the effects of multipath or suit all GNSS applications. A new class of multipath mitigation methods exploit new dualpolarization antenna technology. GNSS signals received 140 23rd International Technical Meeting of the Satellite Division of The Institute of Navigation, Portland, OR, September...
